The VMSD AUDIOLAB is a digital audio production and experimentation facility specially adapted for developing audio components of virtual environments. The AUDIOLAB provides state-of-the-art digital audio processing hardware and software and serves as a testbed for integrating sound and music in VR applications. Housed in an acoustically adapted room, the AUDIOLAB provides adequate working conditions for high-quality audio work.
The AUDIOLAB was designed and is maintained by Gerhard Eckel and Martin Gerke. It is located at the GMD headquaters in building C3, room T29/31, where it was installed during the first months of 1997. The first production carried out in the AUDIOLAB is the sound track and audio environment of caveland which was demonstrated in GMD's CyberStage at the CeBIT'97 in Hannover last March.
Typically, the AUDIOLAB is used to:
To accomplish these tasks the following digital audio production methods are employed:
The AUDIOLAB comprises the following hardware components:
On the PowerMacintosh workstation the following software is installed:
On the INDY workstation the following software is installed:
The following equipment is owned by Martin Gerke and connected to GMD's devices. Both parts of the AUDIOLAB are independent, but are most efficient when used together.
